THE THEORY
of
RECAPITULATION
of
BREATHING
or
HOW WE BREATH

The living organisms passed long way of evolution developing from the most primitive one-cell creatures into the most complicated creatures with humans on the top of the scale. The motor control mechanisms or mechanisms that brain uses to perform and control different motor skills also developed during the evolution from the very primitive level to its present highly developed state. The Nature or Creator nevertheless didn't throw away all previous motor control methods. Instead of it these once leading and most developed levels of motor control converted to be the servants of the new, more progressive motor control levels. I already wrote about this in the previous chapters. I called it recapitulation of motor control.

My study and research of breathing shows that very similar process happened during the evolution with breathing. It's not surprising of course.
We will be rather deeply surprised if it would be different.

We move down our hyoid bone during inhalation like fish, amphibians, some reptiles and mammals, but it started from fish. We move up our hyoid bone during exhalation like amphibians, some reptiles and mammals, but it started from amphibians. We apply our torso muscles, including intercostal muscles, during inhalation and exhalation like reptiles and mammals. This method started from reptiles. We apply our diaphragm like mammals and even crocodilians, the very special members of reptilian family. Some changes of our voice and breathing, its speed, ratio and depth have roots in apes. Finally, we can perform breathing through mouth or nostrils by our will. The breathing is closely connected to the voice and speech and our abstract ideas, like representation of cosmos by voice or imagination of it. This level of breathing control is human. The last level of breathing control is "future", the vision and feeling of future events. All levels of breathing control have close connection with emotions and "future" level is not an exclusion from this rule. When done naturally all these actions are not intentional and rather have reflexive nature.

The functions of these breathing motions changed accordingly to their role and status during the evolution process. The control of breathing is organized in very similar way to the level organization of the motor control of locomotion. Therefore, we have 7 levels of the control of breathing – fish, amphibian, reptile, mammal, ape, human and future. The lower levels of control of breathing, which long ago were the leading levels, became the servants of the new levels – similar to what we observe in the case of motor control. These lower levels act like floors of the house during construction – each floor is built on the previous one.

This model of control of breathing describes the new Theory of Recapitulation of  Breathing (TRB) that I offer here for the first time.

TRB has tremendous importance for the practical method of breathing training. There are many different methods of breathing, but if we want to follow the natural way we have to breath according to TRB.

Every Natural Motion is based on ameba level and developing toward the highest level – human or "future". The same is true for the Natural Breathing – every Natural Breathing is based on the fish breathing and developing into the human or "future" level. The best demonstration of these processes can be observed during pandiculation and yawning respectively. Then our reflexes take control over ourselves and Natural Motion and Natural Breath break out with all their vigor and strength.
