If you have
trained seriously for any length of time, you have noticed something you may
never have said out loud. Every deep system holds a piece of the truth. The
internal martial arts feel the spiral and the sink. Systema knows the wave and
the breath. A biomechanist will show you the spine driving the stride. A dancer
lives inside the line. A good coach can feel, without naming it, when a
movement is whole and when it is fighting itself. Each of these is real. None
of them is wrong.
And yet — you
have felt this too — none of them is the whole thing. Each holds a true piece,
and each, sooner or later, reaches the edge of its piece and stops. For most of
my life this puzzled me. If so many careful people have found so many true
things, why does no one seem to hold the whole picture at once? Why do the
pieces never quite add up to a living body that moves?
I think I finally
understand why, and the reason is not that anyone lacked a piece. It is about
which way you are facing.
You can cut a cow into steaks. You cannot build a cow from steaks.
Here is the image
that made it clear to me. A cow is a whole, living thing. You can take it apart
into steaks — good ones, correctly cut, each a real piece of real meat. But no
matter how many steaks you gather, however fine they are, you cannot assemble
them back into a cow. The cutting only runs one way. The whole can be divided
into parts; the parts can never be reassembled into the whole, because the
whole was never a sum of parts to begin with. It was alive. It had something
the pieces do not carry, and the moment you cut it, that something is gone from
them.
This, I believe,
is exactly the situation in the study of human movement. The deep systems each
hold a steak — a genuine, correctly cut piece of the whole. The spiral is a
steak. The spinal engine is a steak. The breath, the wave, the line, the sink —
all real, all true, all theirs. But they are pieces of a whole that was already
taken apart before anyone picked them up. And you cannot arrive at the living
whole by collecting them, however many you find, because you are facing the
wrong direction. You are trying to build a cow out of steaks.
ISAI begins from
the other end. It begins from the cow — the whole, living picture of the body
in movement, spirit and structure and motion as one thing — and it cuts
downward into parts only when a part needs to be explained. The parts come out
of the whole; the whole is not made from the parts. That is the
difference, and it is not a difference of cleverness or of having found one
more piece. It is a difference of direction. It is why no assembly of existing
findings, however complete, will ever arrive where this begins — because it
begins with the animal alive, not with the meat on the counter.
How
do you know your cow is real?
Now, if I stopped
there, you would be right to be suspicious. Anyone can claim to see a whole.
Every mystic and every salesman claims a vision no one else has. What separates
a real theory from a beautiful daydream?
The answer is
that a good theory is born in three phases, in order, and it must pass through
all three.
First, the
vision.
The whole comes first, and it comes as a seeing, not as a sum. This is true of
every real theory, not just mine. Einstein saw himself riding alongside a beam
of light before there was any mathematics. Darwin saw the whole tree of descent
before the mechanism was worked out. The vision is apprehended whole and then
spends years being accounted for. This first phase is the one outsiders most
often mistake for unscientific — and they are half right. Vision without rigor
is only mysticism. But they miss the other half: rigor without vision is only
cataloguing steaks. You need the cow first. Everything else is the labor of
explaining what you have already seen.
This is not a
poetic claim, and I do not rest it on charming stories. The famous French
mathematician Jacques Hadamard studied it seriously — he surveyed the leading
scientists of his day, Einstein among them, and set down what he found in An
Essay on the Psychology of Invention in the Mathematical Field. He
described four stages: preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification.
First the long, conscious, saturating work on the problem. Then a period of
incubation, in which the mind goes on working beneath awareness. Then
illumination — the sudden arrival of the answer, and, as Hadamard and Henri
Poincaré both testified, it arrives as a single whole, often as an image seen
rather than a sentence spoken. And then, indispensably, verification: the labor
of proving what was seen. Notice that this is the same three-beat sequence I am
describing — the vision, then the science — given a careful name by a serious
mind, and notice its two guardrails: the illumination comes only after
long preparation, and it is worth nothing until it is verified. It does not
replace the work. It is the fruit of the work, and it demands more work after
it.
The famous
stories are only illustrations of what Hadamard described in earnest. Kekulé
said the ring structure of benzene came to him as he dozed by the fire and saw
a snake seize its own tail. Bohr is said to have dreamed of a sun with planets
wheeling around it and woken with the picture of the atom — if the story is
true. Mendeleev is forever linked with a dream of the periodic table, though he
himself said, more soberly, that he had worked on it for a very long time. Take
the legends as loosely as you like; the point beneath them is solid, and it is
this: in every case what arrived in the flash was a whole — the ring,
the atom, the table — and never a single piece. The vision hands you the
animal, not a cut of the meat. And then, every time, the years of proving
begin.
Second, the
science.
The vision must now answer to mechanism, to anatomy, to physics, to evidence.
It must be translated from "I see that this is so" into "here is
why it is so, in terms that connect to what is already known and can be
checked." This is patient, humbling work, and it is honest precisely
because it can fail. When you hold a vision up to the evidence, some part of it
may not survive — and if it does not, you cut it. I have done this. I have
carried claims for years that the evidence would not support, and let them go.
What remains, I can ground: in the way the spine drives movement, in the
springs of the tendons, in the pressure of the trunk, in the deep pattern the
nervous system is born with. And what I cannot yet prove, I mark plainly as my
proposal, not as fact. That line — between what is established and what is
still mine to prove — is not a weakness in a theory. It is the sign that a real
mind is at work on it.
Third, the
experiment. The theory must make predictions that could prove it wrong, and then
someone must do the test. Here I will be as plain as I can be. My students and
I have decades of practice, and that practice is real evidence: it shows, on
real bodies, under real conditions, that the system works. But practice
that works is not the same as mechanism that is proven. The formal experiments
that would show why it works — that would confirm or refute the specific
claims at the heart of it — those are still ahead of me. I know what they are.
I can name them. They have not yet been done.
Where
this leaves the theory — and you
Put those three
phases together and you can see exactly where ISAI stands, and I would rather
tell you exactly than impress you vaguely.
The vision is
complete. The whole cow — the living picture of spirit, body, and movement — is
there, and it has been there, tested against my own body and my students'
bodies, for a very long time. The science is well advanced: most of it rests on
established ground, and the rest is marked, honestly, as proposal. The
experiments are named, and they are waiting to be done.
A theory at that
stage is not speculation, and it is not a finished monument either. It is
something better than both: a living research program with its vision secured,
its mechanism largely built, and its hardest tests in view. That is what real
work looks like before its final proof — and it is a far more advanced and more
honest position than either a pile of excellent steaks with no cow, or a cow
that its owner refuses to ever put to the test.
So I am not
asking you to believe me. I am asking something more interesting. I am asking
you to come and look at a whole — a living picture of how the body moves — and
then to test it, on the one instrument you actually trust, which is your own
body. Bring the steak you already hold; it is real, and it will have its place.
But do not expect to have seen the animal until you have seen it whole and
alive.
That is what this
is. Not a better steak. The cow.
